Charles F. Wickler
Charles Wickler is retired from Hamilton School District in Sussex, where he spent a career as an elementary art teacher. He holds a Master’s Degree of Professional Development from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.
Wickler’s art touches more than the visual nerve. His provocative imagery combines text and object. His art reflects current events, political attitudes and stimulates thought. When he talks about his vision, he is clear that it is not meant to be decorative. Instead, he says that his works “are meant to confront the viewer to stop and react to an image in a new context.” He finds inspiration from casual encounters with words, in social commentary and in found images.
His work has been exhibited and won awards in numerous galleries and museums. This artwork is a collage of words related to diversity in the Waukesha community. These words were brainstormed by groups of young adults and adults from the community.
Word Work/Waukesha is located just outside the Teen Zone. Acquired in 2006.
